Microcontroller Cycle Timer

I'd like to make a simple 5 min on, 15 min off cycle timer for my hydroponic garden. Eventually, the microcontroller will output information to an LCD but for right now i'm trying to stick to some basics. But, i'm struggling to find a good tutorial to help me get my feet wet with the Atmel Atmega8.
