That looks like a really awesome gizmo, Telsa certainly was a clever man. I have seen a desk-toy that is very similar, a spinning top. I stared at it for hours thinking how it could work!!
Basically there is a rotating magnetic field underneath the bowl. This field is created very much like a brushless motor. This link here explains it well...
