I agree for passive resistance loads, but for nonlinear {pressure vs displacement } fluid solenoids, how can you assume this?

Simply try them? - why imagine vague theoretical 'possibilities'. we're talking about a back EMF diode across a relativity small coil.

No I was thinking about the physical consequences of a slow fluid valve and wondering if that was un/desirable for a stable return operation. The EMC consequences are most desirable, but less damping is possible for greater speed with an added series diode resistance or the lower rated diode that is 10x higher.

But I agree there is no harm in trying and any diode or RC snubber is better than nothing.
