Dude, you need to give us more information to go on than what you've said so far - sheesh! Are we supposed to read your mind? Does the unit's display light up? If it has preamp outputs, is there audio coming out from it? Could be any one of a number of possible problems that can cause no audio output to the speakers.
The 40W per channel is Peak power. Peak power is just double the real RMS continuous power which is 20W per channel. The 20W per channel is with the amplifier clipping its head off producing horrible-sounding 10% distortion. It is about 15W per channel without clipping.
