PCB silkscreening

Does anyone know the hobbiest's way of puting text on the component side of a PCB, without using double sided boards.

I've always wanted to make my boards look that little bit better and easier to load. But I think using two sides is a real waste, when one is used only for text. Is there some special paint that you can get with stencils? Or are we all doomed to wasting copper and having it all on the soldering side?

You could do a toner transfer of some kind if you have a laser printer. basically, you print an inverted image onto paper that will lose the toner easily, and then iron it on.
