Referencing the manual, see Page 6 PLAYE & PLAYL description. Page 9, section 2 & 3. I couldn't say it clearly myself.
 
The datasheet says clearly what happens using PLAYE and PLAYL.

Connecting PLAYE a negative going pulse activates playback (after the debounce circuit time setting) and continues playback until the message ends. (Triggering is done with a momentary pushbutton)

Connecting PLAYL a negative going voltage level has to be maintained for playback. As soon as this input returns high (or floating, because of internal pullup) playback is interrupted. (Triggering should be done using an SPST switch)
