phidgetsusa.com sells RFID readers that plug into your computers' USB port, and they also sell RFID tags of every shape and size; everything from credit-card-sized, to keychains, to poker-chip-sized, to coin-sized, down to the 2mm x 12mm glass pill-shaped ones. if you don't want to have a computer in the loop, you can find serial-based RFID readers (try ebay or something) and then use a microcontroller to handle the authentication, and trip a solenoid or motor to allow the flap to open.
