Reading one of my textbooks (Circuits, Devices and Systems: A First Course in Electrical Engineering by Ralph J. Smith), I ran across this, in the chapter on transformers:

Fifty-three years later [after 1831] at an exhibition in Turin, Italy, the English engineers Gaulard and Gibbs demonstrated an "electric system supplied by inductors", using "secondary generators" with open iron cores.

Is this Gibbs any relation of yours?
