TV/DVD Recorder Help

I have a HD tv, and I just recently bought a DVD recorder. Before I got the dvd recorder, I had the setting on Component 1 to watch tv. Then, after I got the DVD recorder I had to watch TV on Component 2 to be able to record. I can record anything on regular(not HD) channels. When I go to a HD channel(like ESPN HD), grey bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen. I don't know how to get rid of them, and I need to get rid of them before I can record a HD program. Somebody please help ASAP?

I shouldn't worry about it, your DVD can't record HD anyway!.
