time delay question

Hello, I am working on analyzing non-deterministic behavior within the p-n junction. I have two circuits I am trying to use, one with a diode and a resistor (in series), and another with a diode, a resistor, and an inductor (in series). According to my research I should be able to get period doubling by increasing the frequency of the sinusoidal current being driven through the circuit with a function generator and observing it with an oscilloscope which I have setup. My first question is which circuit schematic should I pursue?
Secondly, I was told by an EE that I needed a time delay in the feedback drive circuit, how would I accomplish this with my current setup?
Thanks for the input!
