Reprogram lcd watch

Hello all,
I just wanted to find out. is it possible to take an existing off the shelf LCD watch and reprogram it to dispaly something new like say: do a countdown?

I have a project similar to that which I am trying to create. I will be glad to get opinions from anyone that has done something like this before.

Existing watches are not programmable.
