countdown timer

guys,
I want to make a countdown timer with start/stop and reset buttons. Can anyone give me a schematic diaram please.

I have a drag racing type start tree w/ 2 blue lights,3 yellow lights, a green light and one red light (per lane).
Built for pinewood derby racing. If you hit the "gas button" before the green light then the red light comes on. About 1 second between lights.Reset and go again
works real well
Look at 4017 circuits for simple count down circuits.
