Outdoor display problems. LED, LCD

We need a very vibration resistant, 4 character type display to be used outdoors but inside a case. I really wanted to use a LED 7seg display but with testing, it is obvious that the LED is next to impossible to see in the sun. LCD proves a better solution here but they are, IMO, not near as robust.

What options do we have here? Need a robust setup but need to see it, day or night.

thanks

What is the bezel material and color? Direct sunlight is hard to overcome regardless of the LED brilliance or intensity. That is where the bezel and mounting come into play. such as mounting with a small overhang to create shade over the bezel.

put a light sensor on it, to dim it in darkness. This is the way the professionals do it. They mostly use LEDs, unless you want to go to high resolution graphics

If you can manage with a small viewing angle then the display could be mounted inside a matt black shroud to improve visibility. Still won't cope if the display is aimed anywhere near the sun's direction though :(.
