i have a device that says its typical supply current should be around 2.5mA. How do i make sure the supply current is around that range?

You don't, the device takes what it wants - the figure is only specified to give you some idea of it's power requirements.

Nigel answered one interpretation of your question. I'll answer the other.

If you want to verify that it is drawing around 2.5ma, put an ammeter (milliammeter) in series with the power supply.
