max7300 advice

I'm havign trouble getting the max7300 i/o port expander to work correctly. I can't seem to get the ports to configure to an output. it looks like when ever I write or read to the right slave address my my data gets screwwed up. it uses an I2C interface. Has anybody used this device before?
