hi, i am simply trying to charge two 1.2v rechargeable batteries, would it be ok to put a 5v source to charge them both or is this too much for the two batteries.

You need to worry about current into the battery, not voltage. As long as it's not larger than battery's rated capacity and you stay nearby measuring battery's temperature, you should be OK.
I assume AA NIMH (very common), you need to regulate how much current is going into the battery at any one moment. I reccomend you read the energizer nimh battery manual to learn how to charge them.
