Forum posting rules

I recently heard of an incident in chat involving a forum member that had his account "hacked" (not sure if it was actually hacked or not). The hackers came onto the forum and started harassing other members. The incident has been reported to the moderators and it most likely made it's way up the chain of command to EM.

This incident does outline an obvious problem with the forum, lack of a writen set of rules that members must follow. I am a member of several forums and one of them has a very good set of rules. I'm going to post a version of those rules here but they will be taylored to this forum.

1- Posts are to be made in the relevant forum. Users are asked to read the forum descriptions before posting.

2- Threads should remain on topic, do not "hijack" topics.

3- Do not open a new thread that duplicates a current topic.

4- Flamebaiting, flaming, being abusing, being disrepectful, trolling, spamming or posting to incite or annoy is not allowed. If you cannot make a positive contribution to the thread, then just stay out of it.

5- Members are asked to not act as "back seat moderators". If you feel a post violates the forum rules, the use the "Report to Moderator" link in the post to report it.

6- Posting pornographic or generally offensive text, images, links, etc. will not be tolerated. This includes attempts to bypass the profanity filter. (ETO as far as I know does not have a profanity filter, this part of the rule is pending)

Rule 7 is irrelevant to this forum, it has been removed

8- Complaints about a player's behavior online should be reported to a moderator rather than posted to this board.

9- Users are permitted to upload one of their own avatars. Avatars must be in good taste and consistent with the other rules of this board.

10- Do not "punt" or "bump" topics. Punting would be making a non-substantive post for the express purpose of bring the thread to the top of the thread list.

11- Members should post in a way which is consistent with "normal writing". That is users should not post excessive numbers of emoticons, large, small or coloured text, etc. Similarly users should not SHOUT or use excessive punctuation (e.g. ! and ?) in topic titles or posts.

12- All posts, in public forums, should be made in the English language.

13- Threads started devoid of commentary will not be allowed (i.e. links, cut-n-pastes, clicky, read this...)

14- Posting topics or threads which are based on race, or religion is expressly forbidden.

This one has been added for this forum;
15- ASCII art should not be used as a suitible substitution for a schematic image. When ever possible, please upload your diagrams in a manor that is easy for other members and is not excessively large. ASCII art used in signatures will be allowed as long as it is not offensive to other members or does not violate any of the above rules.

Posts and threads may be edited, deleted, or locked for violations of these rules. Continued or blatant violation of these rules may result in a temporary or permanent ban.

If you see a post which may violate the above rules, please make use of the "Report to moderator" link provided in the post in question. You may also provide your reasoning on how it violates the above rules.

Any other rules you guys think should be on the list?

...My rules are better...

Although I do like the section about Recieving warnings where you are not allowed to talk about it in the public forum. I see this a lot in the other forum where members are censored in the game for what ever reason, and they go crying to the forum like a baby. Man up, it's a 1 week suspension for first offenses, 2 weeks for the second, 4 for the third. After the 4th incident it will be up to administration to decide what your punishment will be.

hi DT,

As far as I am aware the 'harassment problems' you refer have only recently happened in the Chat Room and NOT on the forums and is being dealt with at the moment.

The majority of the Rules you have listed are already being applied to Threads and Posts by the Moderators.

There is already a link for ETO Forums Rules https://www.electro-tech-online.com/threads/the-forum-rules-read-carefully.101939/

The current Rules and Guidelines for members are satisfactory, too many rules and regulations will IMO stifle the community spirit of ETO.

...My rules are better...
Sorry, but I am not convinced.

The rules of ETO have been written in a way which gives guidance to wise men and generally allows flexibility where required.

Could this emanate from EMs Aus/NZ background where (some, not all) things tend to be a bit more laid back than in Europe and USA?

Lets keep it as it is.

The rules we have are quite effective without being overly complex. I like them.

People unfriendly to the member in question noticed him using ETO chat at the school library. They joined ETO and entered chat to give him a bad time.

I have asked that the member not use ETO chat in the library.

Thats all fine and dandy but 'ignore the established and make em up along the way' seemed to come across here far too often. ;)

(Although that has toned down considerably since a set of moderator keys changed hands!):D

Thread is closed.

If you have a problem with moderation

You are entitled to disagree with a moderators decision, however as stated above we don't allow it do be debated in public. If you have a problem with a moderators judgement, first try to send them a private message, if that fails to resolve the disagreement then please send me (EM) a PM and I will oversee the situation.
