What Do These Abbreviations Mean?

Hi i'm not new to circuits or electronics but I am having trouble learning the basics...
I'm currently working on a LEGO Mindstorms NXT homebrew compass sensor.
I found a pre-made compass sensor in a toy and will soon be hooking it up to the NXT...
The board is manufactured by "KIDSTECH ELECTROICS LTD." and is labled "KT-COMPA5" (Ver. 1.4)
My main problem is the wires that are conected to it

They are labled:
  • "VCC" = (RED WIRE)
  • "SS" = (ORANGE WIRE)
  • "CAL" = (YELLOW WIRE)
  • "SCLK" = (GREEN WIRE)
  • "SD0" = (BLUE WIRE)
  • "RST" = (VIOLET WIRE)
  • "GND" = (BLACK WIRE)
So what do all these mean?

Thank You ----- = TECH GEEK =

VCC is probably the positive supply voltage.
RST might be for Reset.
GND is probably "ground" which is 0V.
The other abbreviations could be anything they made up.
You need to find an installation manual for the circuit board that should explain how to connect to it.

I would guess,
•"VCC" = (RED WIRE) Supply Positive
•"SS" = (ORANGE WIRE) No idea - may be Serial Select
•"CAL" = (YELLOW WIRE) Calibrate
•"SCLK" = (GREEN WIRE) Serial Clock
•"SD0" = (BLUE WIRE) Serial data out
•"RST" = (VIOLET WIRE) Reset
•"GND" = (BLACK WIRE) Supply Ground

If you know about synchronous serial then you can probably get it working but really you need a data sheet.

Can you check what voltage/signal is on each pin when it is in the original device?

Edit, is there any numbers on any chips?

Mike.

•"VCC" = (RED WIRE) - Supply voltage
•"SS" = (ORANGE WIRE) - Slave Select
•"CAL" = (YELLOW WIRE) - Calbirate
•"SCLK" = (GREEN WIRE) - Serial Clock
•"SD0" = (BLUE WIRE) - Slave Date Out
•"RST" = (VIOLET WIRE) - Reset pin
•"GND" = (BLACK WIRE) - Ground (0v)

these pins indicate a slave spi/12c device which have only a Slave Data out and non SDI (salve data in)
