When I need to connect the tracks on one side of my PCB with the other i just use a peice of single core wire and solder at each side.

I have noticed on professional PCBs that there is a much lower profile way of connecting both sides of a PCB, it uses a small ring of metal somehow.

Can someone explain what this is and how it works?

Thanks
John

It's called 'through hole plating', presumably the inside of the hole is plated in some way? - however, it's not a DIY job!.
