tesla coils..?!

What are Tesla coils? do they have any thing to do with TESLA, the guy who was believed to invent the radio before Marconni?
i think that they have something to do with generating high voltages....i saw some( a lot of) websites about it, but it didnt explain what they were...
someone can explain? with his own words?

Yes, Tesla the inventor, is credited with the Tesla Coil,
although it may not have been called that then.
