Start kit

Hello
I have some experience with electronic design and C/C++ programming. But when it comes to embedded systems and programming micros I am a beginner. I wonder if anyone here could recommend a start kit with micro and programming tool which are very common and poplar and easy to learn for a beginner.

I started with the Mikroelektronika stuff. Dead easy to use, although not inexpensive. But the compilers are free for small to medium sized projects, should almost certainly cover everything while you learn.
