I want to build a simple IR switch that will turn on a set of flashing lights used on HO trains (crossing). I picked up a 38kHz IR receiver from Radio Shack (part #276-640) and because of it's size could us this on the top of the platform. I want the train breaking the beam to turn the flashing lights on.

There is a transmitter circuit (plus other circuits) at this URL: http://www.geocities.com/russlk/circuits/pnwdlgk.gif
You will have to copy and paste the URL because Geocities does not allow links. The Radio Shack receiver puts out noise when the beam is broken, so you could filter that and feed to a comparator, or use a latch to keep the light on until reset. The transmitter circuit will operate on 5 to 15 volts.
