rf modulator

i would like to build a set of transmitters and recievers. but i am running across one problem. how to modulate the information weather it be analog or digital into the amp to be sent out I have looked all over the internet for a modulator that uses a decent frequency range for modulation?
any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
