remote controlling via telephone

hello..

im having some trouble with this project. i need some answers to some of my problems..
firstly, is it a necessity to have a microcontroller to activate the devices or will just relays & flip flops do the trick ??
secondly, how do i set a pin number to change to the appliance mode of the phone??
thirdly, how do i set the number of delays/rings before the phone swicthes to appliance mode and eventually ask for a pin number??

i'm quite new at this so i'd really appreciate some help here.
i'd really appreciaate it if anyone can provide me with any links/guides to this project..

There have some articles and circuits is suitable for the tele-remote control such as phone line interfacing, ring detector etc.

Most probably you need need a microcontroller to sense the incoming call ring, the number of ring depends on your program.
