This VCR has been in storage for an extended period of time. Tape loads but the take up reel doesn't start. Read head, capstan etc seem to operate correctly resulting in a pile up of tape. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. TNX

...been a long time since I saw one of them...if I am not mistaken, that unit did utilize a capstan belt for takeup/supply reels and if it has been sitting for a long time, it is more than likely broken or turned in to mush and off it's pulley.

Check the idler wheel (between the 2 spools) for the rubber tyre gone hard or gummy, and make sure the idler swings freely between the 2 spools. Do you have a transparent (cutout) test tape frame so you can see the idler working?

The specific transport/chasis used in those RCA series did not utilize a "rubber bumper" type idler.
The RCA VCR's made by Hitachi were famous for the rubber idler and good profit maker at the time---although it was eventually discontinued by all brands.

Why are some of us still fixing VCRs?
