I truly hope that we in the US get a giant, monolithic government based single-payer health care system, that every for-profit health insurance gets its assets seized by the federal government, and that every single one of you healthy people that bitches about losing your right to choose your doctor or having to wait for health care GET AN ACTUAL DISEASE and then try and see what our system is like (that is, before it would go all single-payer and whatnot).

That is all.

Yea, that's what I need, to be able to turn off my brain and let the Nanny State (tm) make all my decisions for me, what could go wrong with that

Too late speakerguy, the health care industry is too big a business to be shut down like that.

May you be the first to get a chronic illness that insurance companies blacklist. It's not just AIDS anymore.

hahahahahah, I just about fell out of my chair seeing that screenshot Mickster =) I get similar ads myself didn't even notice.

Speaker, the solution is simple, just get every American to refuse to use a for profit health care system, should be easy.
There are options out there.
Alliance for Advancing Nonprofit Health Care

Genetic profiling.....an Insurance Company's handbook for declining cover.

I feel for generations to come.

Yes a big commie-style government takeover of the health care system is what you yanks really need, bring on the USSA!

No seriously, I think that maybe the government should at least set-up a health insurance, build some medical schools and public hospitals which will be run as charitable trusts not businesses. The medical schools could provide free training for young medical staff who have to spend their first five years of work in public hospitals. The most simple forms of medical care could be provided by the public hospitals and the private sector could cater for the more advanced care which would be payed for by the public insurance system.

I think a hybrid public-private system if probably better than a socialist style 100% state owned system like ours. France has a mixture of both private and public healthcare and their system is rated number one in the world.

The US is the only country which doesn't have a universal health care system. I think the US economy pays more for not having free healthcare than it would to have it.

I do not have an answer but would like to make a few observations.

Any service provided by government costs several times what it should be worth and is seldom delivered in a timely manor.

The problem here is that the system has run amok.

In one, not so small, way it is good because huge profits have allowed for the development of CATscan, MRI, and PETscans. And some drugs would not have been created if the possibility of gross profits were not present. Perhaps many things I do not have a clue about.

One could argue that much/(maybe all) of the denied care would not exist without the massive profits.

I do think there is too much money spent on executives and fancy buildings.

But as I said when I started. No answers here.

I think the medical situation here in the US is the next big bubble that's gonna pop like the recent housing market debacle that caused the bulk of the collapse of the economy.

Bring it on!
I dropped my health insurance because every time I needed it It was not there for me.
Paying big money to get screwed every single time I needed it was enough to make me call it quits.
I hope every other American with insurance gets screwed like I did! Honestly I really do!
It would help wake up enough people to perhaps get them to take an honest look at how most every other even half way developed country runs their countries health care needs far more efficiently and effectively than ours.

My grandpa had major heart surgery this winter. He had some of the best coverage available too and he is still getting screwed by his insurance provider because of fine print specifying what medications they will or wont cover. They said what he needs is not typical of open heart surgery with multiple bypasses and an artificial valve. WTF?:mad:
He had the work done by the best doctors in the world! :)
And they say he got by easy and only needed standard medications and less of those than most! :)

WTF! The people that dont know a scalpel from a stake knife are determining what a heart surgery patient does or does not need? WTF!:mad::mad::mad:

So you Canadian guys, Do you have an application I can fill out to be come a Canadian resident? :D

For the insurance companies it will not a big deal. But the hospitals and other providers will be in a world of hurt.

Which goes to my theory that insurance companies are little more then parasites.

What the government really needs to do is put a cap on lawsuits, and attorney fees. People shouldn't be able to turn around and sue the doctor, after saving their miserable life, because he left an 'ugly' 1.5 centimeter scar on their belly. The hospital can be a busy place, lots of pressure, lots of potential for mistakes. There are some cases that do deserve consideration, such as administrative mistakes, that gets the patient unneeded procedures that result in loss of function or death. People don't seem to understand that the doctor can not heal your wounds, we have to do that ourselves. The doctor can set bones, so the can mend reasonably straight. He can give drugs to help fight infections, but your body must still do the bulk of the work.

Lawyers shouldn't be allowed to advertise for medical clients, since many need convincing that just being alive just isn't enough these days. They flash the dollars signs, remind them of the unreasonably high medical bill, and point out that they weren't made perfectly whole for the ordeal they just endured. They deserve compensation, and for a mere 30%, they'll do all the paperwork, court appearances cost a little more...

Capitalism only works when the consumer has a choice:
You can choose whether to buy a Toyota, Ford, GM, Honda or nothing at all. You can wait for the prices to come down. For when you have the money, job, etc.
Have a heart attack and you have no choice and no time to "shop around", etc.

Imagine what you'd pay for a crappy car if the salesman knew that you had to buy a car from him the minute you were pushed onto the lot. Competition becomes meaningless in that scenario.

The timing of Google Ads....
Timing has nothing to do with it. The Ad bots search the thread for key words and adjust their content accordingly. Still kinda funny though. ;)

I guess AdBlock Plus in Firefox takes care of those, I see no ads :)

But it doesn't matter. I have health insurance right now. Quite good insurance at that, not that they are paying for anything other than medication, and I'll have it for another five months. But if I don't land a job by the end of the year I am really screwed.

The way to better health care is not to socialize it. This will only make things worse. When services are handed out for free, the demand will far exceed the supply and the system will fail.

What needs to happen is that Americans need to get beyond the mindset that every visit to the doctor needs to be paid for by the insurance company. Insurance should only cover the big expenses - meaning higher deductibles. Why would this be better? Because if we had to shop around for regular health care, prices would be driven down. Right now no one, when told they need an xray or a test, will ask "How much does that cost?". What they will ask, though, is "Does my insurance cover that?"

So how would we pay for the xrays or tests that are needed? With higher deductibles, the insurance premiums would be lower. Money can then be taken and placed into an account (the horrors - a health savings account!) that can then be used for medical expenses. You could shop around for prices on those tests and xrays, etc - because believe it or not - prices will not be the same (how would you know this, though, if you never asked).
