push button array interfaces to micro

Hello,

Trying to find an efficient way of interfacing some kind of a push button array to a microcontroller with minimal pin use.

I am wondering what method is being used on something like a universal remote control where there is a wide array of user buttons that interface some kind of a microcontroller.

What other types of button interfaces are there that are used to interface a microcontroller, such as up down left right button control?

Any good resources for such button interfaces that anyone may know of?
