I started the interview in a room of about 80 other people and each time I was asked back there were half the people that were there before.

I get sort of the opposite thing. Typically the first interview with one manager guy, a second interview with his boss and some co-workers, and at Sega I had a third interview that had the original people plus some Japanese corporate types and an interpreter.
