Microchip posted advance information on a new series of powerful 16 bit microcontrollers, called PIC24. Look at the smallest one's specs! :

Unfortunately, none of them will come in hobbyist friendly packages... I wonder if they are based on the dsPICs?

Not bad for $130...

It's not like I'd need that kind of performance anyway. Anyone's planning on plunking down $130 on that devboard?
 
I was expecting this new 24bit PICs to appear. I am so happy they finaly did
They have 40MIPs performance, now that's what I call pretty fast chip (160Mhz)

I was dissapointed when I found out they will be available only in <64 TQFP package (I have to make a special TQFP->DIP header :? ).

Yes, PIC24F/H are based on DsPIC33F, core is the same but they miss DSP engine (although they still have multiply/divide HW support) which I don't need 8) . But Instruction set is pretty difficult to learn
