Just curious... since my pulses don't need to be pretty, do I really need the 5556's? Can I get by with just the RC's?

Do you care if the current pulse that occurs on the rising edge flows the same direction as the one on the trailing edge. If Yes, then you cannot do it with just a series capacitor.

Since the resistance of the coil is low (I guessing less than 100 Ohms), then it will take a huge capacitor.
