You can use 240 ohms from the output to the ADJ pin on an LM317 if the input to output voltage differential is low. The operating current is spec'd at 10mA max with 40v across it, and is less at a lower differential voltage. They don't tell you how much lower is the current at what voltage for its max, but they show "typical".
