The same thing that happened to magnetic bubble memory.

With the memristor I think theory slammed into manufacturing reality while making memristic devices.
No one has actually made a true memristor with the properties of the 'fourth element'.
The passive 'fourth element' properties bridge magnetic flux and charge but none of the current memristic devices
operate with flux and are mainly electrochemical in nature.
