LCD Displays: Industry Standards Besides HD44780?

The title says it all. The reason I ask is because I get asked this a lot while doing character display projects. I had the impression there was at least one major standard--maybe more popular overseas?

...and before I get any static about it, yes I realize "LCD Displays" is a redundant title. :lol:

The standard is the Hitachi HD44780, it's rare to find a text LCD module that doesn't conform to this standard - so there isn't anything else remotely resembling a standard.
