What are the main reasons behind using an isolation amplifier in medical applications?

Presumably for safety reasons?, it's not considered good practice 'frying' your patients

Also to protect the equipment. Without isolation an ECG isn't going to last long when a shock is delivered from a defibrilator.

If you really want to fry your brain on the subject of medical electrical safety read IEC 60601-1. Worst guidance document ever written, just runs you in circles
