i found two basic circuits that allow a computer to be controlled via the serial port and a remote control. i am simply wondering if one circuit is bettter than the other. in other words, will one function differently than the other or give me some type of advantage?
All either does is connect a standard IR receiver to a computer's serial port. The sensitivity of the IR receiver is determined by the TSOP, so either circuit is equal. I'm guessing that any differences result in what the software does with serial data stream...

Girder is trial only $50 after that.
The other is comand line linex.
Who cares about the hardware.
In this case its the software that counts.
Look for an USB IR adapter.
