Yes it is a 2SD401A. Just a Poor Font.

A Little Known Fact, Be Aware, there are TWO Different 2SD401A's.

Can't rememeber the Desigination, but One is Just an Audio Transistor.
The Other is a "K" SERIES and is Much Higher Frequency. This is What is Required in this circuit.

When doing a Production Run years ago, I purchased the Wrong One. Bad Mistake, but that was when I found this out.

Found place (see link below) where you can get ready to install ion generator but HV output is about 20KV. You just need to plug this thing in 115 AC. All, low and high voltage circuits done inside single block.
