I have a taken a project of making a digital door lock and I want to gather basic information of what are the first steps I have to take to start making it. I want to know everything from the scratch.

You should look at Maxim's iButtons. Great for a digital lock and they'll send you free smples. Other than that you should get one of their 1-Wire compatable microcontrollers to read the iButton, a solenoid to open the lock and a transistor to drive the solenoid.
