ok I've been working for a company as a quality control inspector through an agency. Now I have been given an application form to be taken on permanently.

on the form it asks what pay i expect and i have no idea what to put. obviously i would like as much as possible but i don't want to put a silly figure down, some that they can say well we can give you just a little less than that or: well we were thinking of.... but if you want... you can have it.

trouble is I've lived abroad for 15 years so I have no idea what to expect...

any suggestions ? I'm returning the form tomorrow morning

Have a look for advertisements in the classifieds or on-line, for similar positions as close as possible to your work location, then base/adjust your expectations accordingly.

What do you make now? The agency has tacked on a bit for their part, so I would think the company could pay you a little more that you are making now.:)

hehe minimum wage 5.73 £/h I'd ern more working in a warehouse...... fun job though with more potential, now they are taking me on I have a bit more... bite

I expect they pay the agency around £8/h

If your familiar with the company and the average pay scales for permanent employees and their related work loads, skill, and importance of what they do you may be able to come up with a fair estimate to what your permanent position pay rate should be.
Also If they offered you the position and you are not the one that actually asked for the permanent job that does give you some strong positive leverage.
If they came to you use the advantage. Set a realistic figure you want (but dont disclose it) and aim higher and let them think they worked you down.

The best job and highest pay I ever received was from a company that I turned down twice! The only reason I am still not there was due to corporate restructuring that closed down my department. :(
But my severance package payed for most of the expenses related to starting my own business though. :)

Keep it in mind that you may want to pad yourself in case of a restructuring as well. The permanence of a position can be far short of permanent.
A longer term work contract with a healthy severance pay package may very well be worth settling for. Ask for a good deal more than you want in the first place and just trade in that higher starting pay request as a bargaining chip to wards long term employment stability or at least a bigger pillow to fall back on. ;):)

Quality control is a very important part of creating a great product and a great company reputation. I think that makes it a rather valuable position!

Good Luck! I hope it works out in your favor! :)

well i owrked for them as a pressure tester (laborour) and got laid off hen redundacies were made as being agency then also i had to go first, 2 months later when someone left and the position of QC inspector was vacant they rang the agency and asked for ME, I've been there three and a half months and they are talking about making me permanent so yea they want me I have lots of people on my side.

What amount does the qualified position command, on average, and how long would the training period be?

I think 20-30 K

I'm working with goods in at the moment I'll get given more work as they think i can handle it. as it is I'm already doing internal production and final inspections

Is it a specialist application where you have the advantage of product familiarity, due only to previous experience, or a generic application where others with more field-wide experience could have an advantage?

With the current economic situation more and more candidates, that may be potentially more suitable than yourself, are probably distributing CV's/Resumes to anywhere that may accept them, in an effort to not end up on the breadline.

Don't sell yourself short, but don't price yourself out of the market too.

Does the form go to a HR department, for 'filtering', or directly to your line manager?

Maybe "To be discussed at interview." could be an option? Depends on the circumstances.....

well I'm already working in the position through and agency, I will just pass from agency to the actualy company its still the same job.

they manufactur radiators and engine cooling packs (water oil and air) I'm not particularly qualified in the feild but learn fast and have a good grounding technical things anyhow after all learning electronics has given me a good grounding in how to approach problems and find solutions

Returning the form tomorrow probably does not matter. Re-inventing one self has been my personal (MO) Modus operandi learn grow and adapt. With that said you have 2 options leave open the value after your ablility to get the training with grade level achievements is what your after.

This must be respected by not just your supervisor but the owner all the way down. Going from 8-9 an hour to 20 to 30 k is a big step they will always bulldog. Ask for it and get it in writing. Then prove your value it's all you can hope for step level achievement is possible. If it's done right and they respect it.

If your originally from the United States or if your from Britan as I don't know what the meaning of abroad is or where you return from ? If your in the States the contractual agreement is binding in a court of law and is defensible as a Citizen. Using Government Lawyer with a Civil Liberty Law Suit.

Hi Thunderchild,

you have excellent knowledge about the payment you receive from the agency.

Agents calculate their prices that way normally: Payments given /3 * 4. This is the price the agency sells you out.

E.g. Your payment 6 pounds/hr. Agency's calculation: 6/3*4. So the agency is selling you for 8 pounds/hr. :)

Stay a little bit below that price and you'll have the job. :D

Dont' make it 7.50. Use a very odd number for the pennies like 7.86 (to get as close as possible to the agency's price but still below)

All businessmen like odd numbers, thinking they are well calculated, and don't allow any space for bargaining. :D

I'm british and went to italy for 15 yrs

Maybe you can use this link as a guide. It is US bucks but maybe you can convert to euro bucks.

**broken link removed**

This from google.
1 U.S. dollar = 0.747775368 Euros

8 euro seems somewhat on the low side. Shoot for more perhaps, after all they did throw out the offer. Temp agencies in the US usually make a great deal more than what the worker is paid, something like double. If the company is throwing in benefits then you need to include that into your salary. Tough call...

I don't know what the cost of living is in UK, but minimum wage in Cali is about 8 bucks.
https://www.californiawagelaw.com/wage_law/2009/01/california-minimum-wage-for-2009.html

I guess it also depends on your background, education and experience. One thing to consider, is there room for career growth?

I would say "to be discussed" as previously mentioned.

Start at a reasonable amount i.e. £18k with a view to have it increased to £22k after 6 months subject to them being happy with your work etc.

That way you show you're willing to work for your money/pay rise and they feel they have nothing to lose.

£18k a year effectively puts you on around £8.88 per hour.

Can you folks in the UK live on that salary? I would be homeless on that pay. I guess UK cost of living is lower than here.

A lot of people don't have the choice over here.

I'm actually on about a third of that salary at the moment but then I work part time and my business fits around my househusband duties. My wife is on around national average wage and we struggle a bit but scrape through every month.

As an example of costs over here (with rough $/£ conversion) :

Petrol (Gas) = $6.15 per gallon
Cigarettes - Pack of 20 = $7.85
Big Mac = $2.85
My last quarterly electricity bill = $400
My last quarterly gas bill = $350
Electricity = $0.47 per KWh for first 212kWh and $0.18 per Kwh thereafter
Car tax (yearly) = $270
House tax (yearly) = $2600 (on an average property in this area)

We spent some time over in Socal last year and loved it - everything was cheaper, bigger and better. A visit to Costco was pretty eye opening and when we joined up with the Costco in the UK we were rather disappointed as the prices were similar to many of the other supermarkets over here.

My brother lives in Irvine where he's just bought his first house (he married a Yank) and since moving over to the USA has never looked back.

It seems as though your cost of living is higher than here, and yet your pay is so low. That does not seem fair.
