Hey guys. I wanted to make a ethernet switch... Using a couple transistors. Can i use a simple NPN (Like a Mosfet....2n7000)to switch a single wire (1 of 8 wires)?

Im stating 1 wire for simplicity right now...

or can i use a relay to control 1 wire? Like im sure i can but will it affect the speed by much?

Before this goes any further I wanted to make sure you know this method (if you found a working solution) would only allow you to use one connection at a time and is not how "Ethernet Switches" are typically made. Ethernet switches don't just rapidly switch from one wire to the next so an Internet connection is shared. Switches take multiple inputs, tag the outgoing packets and re-route tagged incoming packets to where the request originated. Don't be offended if you already knew all of that, just didn't want you to get the wrong idea.

I want to make it to close or shut off my connection. I plan to make a program for my cell phone (windows mobile) to communicate with PC and shut off my second computers internet connection and turn on as i please. Since i have so many visitors in my house and they dont know when to leave since there on the second PC all day...

Heh... So i got it working tho... Thanks!
