Some years ago, magazine and Web articles on robotics mentioned a type of wire that either lengthened or shortened when current was passed through it. I think there was even a DIY piece on making a device that would 'walk' based on this phenomenon. I can't find any reference now; does anyone remember this and, hopefully, know the name and source for this wire? Many thanks.

I can only think of muscle wire.... Heat lengthens it and a current retains it's original shape... https://www.coolcomponents.co.uk/en/muscle-wire-shape-memory-nitinol.html
Is this what you are thinking of...

OR!!! This https://www.dynalloy.com/flexinol.php

Well, you live and learn- fascinating.
