Discrete CMOS Inverter ?

Hello everyone,

I am thinking of using MOSFET N channel like IRF540 and MOSFET P channel like IRF9540 to build CMOS inverter. It this feasible ?
 
Yes, you basically simply need a single FET and a couple of resistors, or a bipolar transistor and a couple of resistors.

Exactly what are you wanting this for?, it's highly unlikely you need to replicate an IC inverter.
 
You can use those MOSFETs to make a CMOS power inverter but the minimum gate and supply voltage will be 10V for proper switching of the MOSFETs.
Note that this will give a significant shoot-through current when being switched unless the input switching voltage is very fast (which will require a high current gate driver to rapidly charge and discharge the large MOSFET gate capacitances.
 
He's now posted a probable explanation in another thread - he's apparently trying to make a crystal oscillator.

Let me help you think as a Design Pro.

Start with full performance specs,and load limits.
Compare with existing products
Set budget. Time limits
Choose make or buy on any part or whole unit.
Make/Review plan
Create a test plan, list of tests (DVT) to validate design assumptions.
Then start over, anytime, you dont like results and modify specs,
Do regression tests.
