Converting an input frequency into a voltage output?

As the title states guys, i'm having a bit of trouble finding the best and easiest way for turning a frequency into an output voltage.

This input frequency would be variable, (between about 2KHz-4KHz) and would be for input to a processor eventually to give an output reading for a 7 segment display.

Could anyone give some advice on how to make a circuit that will achieve the above challenge?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it is going into the processor, just use a timer to count cpu clocks between up or down edges of the input signal. No external electronics is required.
 
Is the variable frequency signal digital? If not, what is the amplitude and waveform?
 
The LM2907 is a standard issue frequency to voltage converter IC. It is probably what would work for your needs.

But why convert a frequency into a varying analog voltage which then has to be A/Ded to read by his ucontroller? Just turn it into a digital wave and feed it into a port pin on the ucontroller, and let the ucontroller measure the period.
