battery powered RF on/off siwtch

I'm interested in building an RF transmitter / receiver pair. The application is to send a signal to light up an LED when a switch is closed.

I'd like to build this out of simple discrete components rather than using a an IC.

The range needs to be around 100 yards.

You can use a 434MHz wireless transmitter/receiver pair along with holtek decoder and encoder.
