Any idea what these 45deg areas are for?

I've just got hold of a STM32 Nucleo, and there are 4 x 45deg solder filled areas at the edges of the micro that got me curious.

Any ideas as to what they're for?

SMD stencil alignment? EMC?
 
My guess is that it is for socket for a different package type.
