Hey all, what is an IGBT in simple terms? What are some of the uses for them? Thought you guys could explain this a little better than wikipedia.
Thank you,
Ben

It's a transistor that uses a insulated gate like a mosfet to turn it on. Instead of controlling it by current it does it with voltage. That is the simple answer from a simple point of view. I'm sure others will give you better more technical explanations though.

Why would this guy use them in his SSTC instead of mosfets such as irf260 or 460?

Which is better IGBT or Mosfet?
When compared to the IGBT, a power MOSFET has the advantages of higher commutation speed and greater efficiency during operation at low voltages. ... The IGBT combines the simple gate-drive characteristics found in the MOSFET with the high-current and low-saturation-voltage capability of a bipolar transistor.3 Oct 2011

Plasma parts hard to find. Brilliant picture but technology can't keep up. Plasma heavy on power. Nothing can change that.

Anyway I know nothing as usual.
