An instance of isolated analog and digital ground plane regions

I remember when I was at school the teacher talked about "Single point ground"

At some point you do need to connect the grounds together for a low impedance path. This is usually done at the power connector source.
Your image seems to represent this technique. I think they call it star grounding or something like that.
 
This book is very good, very comprehensive. I will go to the library to see if I can borrow it.
