A Counter circuit to count large range of numbers

I want to build a counter circuit that counts large range of numbers,ie whenever it got the clock signal,it has to do the count in only up side.,So plz help me with this task,actually i want to know the suitable ICs that suits this task..,

What counting rate? (Events per second)

Do you need to display the counts?
Display during counting?

What happens if more events happen than the counter can hold?

How do you reset the counter to start an new counting cycle?
