If you would go 1 mile, you would need to haul 4 times more batteries than for the 1/4 mile run.

That might be true if you're travelling at constant speed, but wouldn't be the case when accelerating. The first second would have much lower load than the last second due to drag

You're right. May be it's not 4 times, but still you need a lot of power to go extra 3/4 miles, and you need to haul the batteries to do that. The longer you go, the more the advantage of a regular car over electric one.
