Which is BC547, BC547B or BC547C among them? Confusing lot!

Can't I simply measure hFE of my transistor myself?

Many multimeters measure hFE.
You can measure it if you limit the maximum collector current with a collector resistor, use a calibrated regulated power supply then use a base resistor that is accurate.

I use BC547B transistors because their range of hFE is selected in a narrow range and the 2N3904 that also has a fairly narrow range of hFE.
 
Only for European BCxxx transistors. American 2Nxxxx TO-92 case transistors are the opposite with the pins as EBC.

Ouch! How barbaric, it's like the 1970's all over again. ;)
