I have 4 of these avalanche rectifiers https://www.vishay.com/docs/86000/1n5059.pdf (1N5062) that I pulled from something. Where you you use them in preference to normal rectifiers? Is it only for inductive loads as the datasheet suggests, or are there other situations?

Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly, if you have a transistor that will suffer transients you would connect the diode across the collector and emitter. The diode would protect the transistor from the transient voltages.

Unfortunately the circuit they came from is long gone - however, that does look like a good tip about transient protection.

Sine wave tracking - got me onto a whole new thing to learn about there!
